Salzburg ~ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

As I was teaching about the Post-Reformation advances in science, music and art. I had the privilege of opening the world of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a classroom of 10th graders. Mozart, in and among a great list of "classic" composers, is not my most favorite, however, he is the most intriguing. A child prodigy who plays and writes for kings and world leaders and dies an unusual death at a young age... It's no wonder that I've always loved the movie "Amadeus."

But the one thing that it got me thinking was a question asked by a student; "Where is Salzburg, Austria?" While I know some about Salzburg, for example, I did know where it was, I thought I'd share some about the area with you!

Salzburg is located on the banks of the Salzach River at the northern boundary of the Alps. It is the fourth largest city in Austria and is home to the Salzburg Festival, a music festival, which takes place every July and August. No, Mozart is not the only famous music-driven person to come out of Salzburg. There is this little story about some singing nun.

Mozart was born in Salzburg and at the age of 17 was hired as a court musician. Even as he traveled all over Europe playing, his family home and heritage was firm in Salzburg. So what can we see in Salzburg when we visit?

Mozart's birth place - Mozart was born to Leopold and Anna Maria Pertl Mozart at 9 Getreidegasse in Salzburg. Today, the birthplace has been restored and turned into "one of the most visited museums in the world", according to their website. Three stories spanning from the actual birth room to the rooms where he composed his first small pieces on the clavier.

Mozart's Residence - In this house Wolfgang wrote symphonies, divertimenti, serenades, piano and violin concerti and a bassoon concerto, arias, masses and other sacred music from 1773 - 1780. It was largely destroyed during World War II, but has been rebuilt and turned into another museum for the composer.

Salzburg Music Festival - This festival has been held since 1877 and was originally established as a festival of music and drama to help celebrate Mozart's work. While it was very intermittent in it's beginning stages, in 1920, it was revived as a celebration and has hosted many famous composers, conductors, and directors. Yes, this is the festival that that same singing nun and her family sang at.

In November, I was blog hopping and came across an amazing blog. I've enjoyed reading her site and drooling over her paper collection / obsession. She has a very similar taste in designs that I do and it was just like finding a little "happy place" on the web.

Anyway.... I have been using the desktop and iPhone calendar designed by Danni, over at "Oh, hello friend" for about three months now and I am so in love with them. She is a great graphic designer and she blends my love for vintage and travel and languages so subtly, it's beautiful.

Plus, I'm totally happy with how my phone and MacBook match.

Dear Michael ~ A letter to my son...

Dear Michael,

10 years ago today, you did something that no one else had done or could do. You made me a mom.

Michael - 11 mths old

Even as I write that sentence, it is hard to fathom that it has been 10 years. I remember the very moment that I held you for the first time. You were crying, wide-eyed and slimy. I know, totally gross, but that's not the point. The point is that you were wide-eyed and crying. Adding that you were slimy is simply because you are ten and you like gross things.

Back to the point... you were crying so loudly that I held you tight and just tried to calm you. Then it happened. You stopped crying.

You stopped crying and I got scared.

There you were... this little, perfect (and slimy) boy. Your eyes were as big as your head and you were looking at everything. Focusing on so much. All of the nurses and the doctor kept commenting about how unusually alert you were.

And there I was. Barely an adult and suddenly, I was in charge of caring and raising a child. Scared. Terrified. FREAKED OUT.

That was ten years ago.

Today?

Today, I am still just as scared, terrified and FREAKED OUT.

But first.... First, can I just congratulate myself? You have survived 10 YEARS!! And honestly, with the number of times that you ate things you shouldn't have, crawled places a baby shouldn't be, played with items that were not toys... it's a pretty impressive feat. You should be thankful. Oh and maybe you should thank your dad because I'm pretty sure he saved your life a few times by NOT letting you do things that I probably would have.

Anyway... just because I got you through these ten years alive, doesn't mean that I haven't scarred you for life. Which is probably why I am more scared now, than I was ten years ago. I really think that some of the hardest times of life are coming upon you quicker than I know I am ready for. I just pray that you are.

Over the next ten years, you will have more to say and more to do than ever before. But more importantly, what you say and do will start to show who you are as a person. You will be forming opinions and perspectives on things that may stay with you that for your entire life.

And me?

Well.... it's my job to help you in forming those and well.... God help us both.

It's going to be hard. But I promise, it'll be hard on both of us. We will probably both make mistakes, but we will both grow. We will both drive each other nuts, but at the end of the day, we'll be grateful for each other. Honestly, that is where my fear comes in... I am so afraid that you'll make mistakes that will hurt. I'm afraid that I'll fail as a mother in teaching you correctly. I'm afraid that you'll become closed-off to hearing me. I've been working with teenagers and young adults for so long that I've seen countless times the strains that many people have gone through. I'm terrified that one day, you and I could have those pains.

Michael - 2.5 years; Hannah - 1 year

I know that I have role-played in my mind so many things. "If this happens.... I'll do this... or that..." But it's true that what works for some, won't work for others and who knows what will come our way. I just thought that as we prepare for the next ten years, I should just tell you what to expect from me and what to hold me to for... well... the rest of your life.

Michael - 3 years. Jaedyn - 3 weeks.

This is my commitment to you.

I will always be your mother before I am your friend.
I will tell you "no" more than I will tell you "yes".
I will always give you advice, not because I want you to do what I say, but because I've been there before and I don't want you to fail into the traps that I did.
I will always tell you things straight. If it's good, if it's bad, if it needs improvement. I'll tell you.
I will always hug and kiss you in front of your friends because I will always love to watch you blush and I know that you do love the affection.
I will be front-row center for all you ever do and always will be your number one fan.
I will never stop being your mom. Remember that 18 is just a number, so don't talk to me about "when you turn 18..." I'll just laugh.
I will study with you for anything until you are ready for everything.
I will dream with you and for you.
I will listen.
I will lecture.
I will always love you more than anyone else who breathes here on earth.

Must See: The Great Reno Balloon Race

I have a love affair with hot air balloons. I think they are romantic and thrilling all at the same time. When I came across information for the 2012 Great Reno Balloon Race, I was enraptured by it. I can't decide if I would rather be up in the balloons or on the ground watching them lift off... what about you? Where would you rather be?

Either way... Mark September 7 - 9, 2012 on your calendars now! This is a MUST SEE!

Introduction to Walt Disney World ~ My Top Five

I have lived in Florida my entire life. Disney World has been just as much a part of growing up as beaches and hot summers. A passholder when I was a kid and a passholder as soon as I could make decisions for myself. While I would not claim myself as an expert, I am certainly not a novice.

I will be doing separate articles on each of the parks, as well as resorts and recreation. But first, these are my top five rules for visiting ANY Walt Disney World park.

1. Bring Snacks! ~ You can bring in food items to the parks. If you want, pack a sack lunch! But at least bring some granola bars, power bars, pretzels, something. You WILL get hungry... and remember you can get free cups of ice water at any quick service station.

2. Remember the parks are huge and not designed to see everything in one day. ~ They wouldn't sell 5 and 6 day passes if you could see a park or two in a single day. Make a "must see" list of your top five attractions before you go or when you first arrive. Then... feel accomplished when you see those in a single day.

3. Don't buy gifts in the first hour that you are there. ~ There are TONS of gift stores and magically a majority of the rides let out into a gift store. Don't get sucked in! Make notes of what you want and where it is and then at the end of the night, go back and pick up the souvenirs that caught your eye. Note that the stores are open an hour longer than the rides. You don't want to carry bags all day and you will probably

4. Take note of where the First Aid station is and don't hesitate to go. ~ Get a headache? Stomach ache? Blister? Need a nap? Believe it or not, all of these can be remedied at the the first aid station. I have visited everyone at the WDW resort and have always left feeling better. Everything from a fever-ridden teether to a light and heat sensitive migraine. I've gotten meds and taken naps. It doesn't cost anything and can save what could be a ruined day.

5. Be prepared to wait in line. ~ 17 million people visit the Walt Disney World Resort in the course of a year. That's a lot of people. Be prepared to wait a little. Be patient with cast members who are trying their best to get those people in and out of attractions quickly and safely. Bring something with you to do while waiting in lines. Hand held games like "20 Questions" is a great one. If you have a group, try "Catch Phrase". If you are prepared to wait in line, you won't be surprised by it and having something to do will make you happy and might make the people around you happy. You'll be surprised at how fast, they'll jump into your fun too!!

In this week's must see, we are taking a look at Kakslauttanen's Igloo Village.

I came across this incredibly "cool" place on Pinterest (swoon) and knew that this was going to go on my MUST SEE list. Located in the Lapland area of Finland, this very unique hotel has a special oppourtunity from December/January to Early April, a night in an igloo! Not not just any igloo.... your choice of either a traditional snow igloo or a more futuristic glass-domed igloo!

Now, I'm from Florida and while cold weather is not my "thing", this once in a lifetime experience would prove to be a night to remember and I would pretend to be thick-blooded, just to say I did it.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!!

Right about now, I will be cuddling up with my kiddos on the couch, getting ready to watch the performers on Herald Square. This is one of my most favorite moments of the entire year. The kids, my husband and myself, all being lazy as cats on the couch with the scent of warm cinnamon rolls in the oven for our traditional thanksgiving breakfast. This year, I have the amazing blessing of GOING TO Thanksgiving dinner, instead of MAKING Thanksgiving dinner. THAT is what I am thankful for this year. :)

It's my prayer this morning, amongst my cinnamon rolls and cuddling, that you have something and someone to be thankful for this year.

Beach Weddings: It's somewhat of a trademark for Floridian photographers. Everyone needs on in their portfolio.

I'm just bias, but this wedding was pretty much awesome.

Much more than just a portfolio check mark for me. It was a night with my family. My extended family.

What is iPhoneography??

Someone asked me this the other day.... According to iphoneography.com, it's simply the art of taking photos with Apple’s iPhone.

I became a proud iPhone owner almost a year ago and honestly, I am not looking back. I have always been a huge supporter of Apple products and I knew it was only a matter of time before I got myself an iPhone. It's seriously a life-changing device.

Included in the life-changingness is the amazing apps for photography. It much less obtrusive than a huge camera to carry around and when you need to be a little more sly in taking a shot... it's perfect.

It's also perfect for when I need to quickly take a picture at a stop sign or traffic light.

AND since I'm in love the Florida sky and soooo many times, I've been driving and wished that I had a camera....

Have I mentioned that I'm in love with my iPhone??

So... I've fallen a little behind.

Ok. a LOT behind.

About a year and 9 months ago, I wrote this awesome post about these 101 things that I wanted to do in 1001 days. I got a lot of comments and encouragement and was even told how I inspired others to do the same.

yeah. I'm a loser.

At this current point in time, I've completed six. SIX!!

wow. Some kind of inspiration I am, huh?

So this is the deal.... I want to complete these. Actually, I NEED to complete these. Now, I'm not being unrealistic... I sat down with the list and I highlighted all the things that I think that I can accomplish between now and September 29, 2011, my 1001th day.

But please feel free to pester me and bug me and ask how I'm doing.... and if i ignore you... well... keep doing it.

#12: Shoot a wedding for someone just because I want to ~ DONE

This wedding was all three rolled into one!! One of my dearest friends invited me to his sister's wedding and not only was it fun to travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, but it was fun to meet Janice and Hugo AND shoot at my first ALL Spanish wedding!!

The following story was sent as an email forward to Mike and I just before we were married. What was meant as a "sweet email forward" was taken as almost a challenge for me and Mike. We began playing this little game while we were in engaged. Now after the addition of three kids and nearly 10 years of marriage, it still pops up. But I'll be the first to admit it... Mike is much better at hiding it then I am. ;)

My grandparents were married for over half a century and played their own special game from the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word "shmily" in a surprise place for the other to find.

They took turns leaving "shmily" around the house and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more. They dragged "shmily" with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers, to await whoever was preparing the next meal.

They smeared it in the dew on the windows overlooking the patio (where my grandma always fed us warm, homemade pudding with blue food coloring).

"Shmily" was written in the steam left on the mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. At one point, my grandmother even unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper, to leave "shmily" on the very last sheet.

There was no end to the places "shmily" would pop up. Little notes with "shmily" scribbled hurriedly were found on dashboards and car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were stuffed inside shoes and left under pillows.

"Shmily" was written in the dust upon the mantel and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’ house as the furniture.

It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love, one that is pure and enduring. However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship.

They had love down pat. It was more than their flirtatious little games; it was a way of life. Their relationship was based on a devotion and passionate affection, which not everyone is lucky to experience.

Grandma and Grandpa held hands every chance they could. They stole kisses, as they bumped into each other in their tiny kitchen. They finished each other’s sentences and shared the daily crossword puzzle and word jumble.

My grandma whispered to me about how cute my grandpa was, how handsome and old he had grown to be. She claimed that she really knew "how to pick ‘em."

Before every meal they bowed their heads and gave thanks, marveling at their blessings: a wonderful family, good fortune and each other.

But, there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ lives: my grandmother had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier.

As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside.

Now the cancer was again attacking her body. With the help of a cane and my grandfather’s steady hand, they went to church every Sunday morning. But, my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house anymore.

For a while, Grandpa would go to church alone, praying to God to watch over his wife. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone.

"Shmily." It was scrawled in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet. As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members came forward and gathered around Grandma one last time.

Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s casket and (taking a shaky breath) he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came (a deep and throaty lullaby).

Shaking with my own sorrow, I will never forget that moment. I knew that, although I couldn’t begin to fathom the depth of their love, I had been privileged to witness its unmatched beauty.

After starting off with some vision difficulties in her preschool class, she found out that she would be the proud owner of a beautiful pair of new glasses. So, in order to celebrate her new look, we took her to her grandparents farm in South Carolina for this very special photo session.

Best Friends Forever aka "BFF"

My best friend and I have been best friends... for well... a long time. And for the sake of revealing how terribly old WE are getting. I'll keep that HUGE length of time, somewhat of a secret. ;)

Let's just say we've literally been through boyfriends, brides and now babies. She is the only person in this world that I can literally talk to about everything. We've seen each other through tons of ups and tons of downs. I couldn't imagine my life without her. She's awesome.

One of the best things about a best friend is the ability to share just about everything. My favorite thing to share? Our kiddos. :) I really couldn't love her babies anymore if they were mine. I've been able to be there with them through so many firsts. First teeth, first colds, first babysitting chances, even first breathes. I cannot wait to be there when they get first cars, first boyfriends and eventually graduation... wedding... and then share in the joy of their future families.

This picture was suppose to be a Christmas present... but alas, it's June and I'm just now getting around to it. :) Oh well. She'll understand.

For the past four years, I have spent a part of my summer traveling all over Central America with Global Expeditions. On my trip to Costa Rica last summer, I met the beautiful Caitlin. She was living in Costa Rica teaching English and one of the churches where she was teaching, just happened to be where we were staying.

She was so helpful and such a blessing to me and my team while we were there that when we returned to the states, I was so excited when she contacted me about photographing her wedding!

Caitlin and Jeff's wedding incorporated not only their love for each other, but how important their love and relationship with God is. Several moments, I found myself truly moved by the spirit and I believe that God was not only blessing their day, but becoming a huge part of it.

97: Donate 3 bags of books to the library - COMPLETED!!

I love books. Not just reading... but the books themselves. I love the smell of a new book. I love the tenderness of an old book. To me, every book is an adventure in your hand and it's something that for as long as I can remember I've enjoyed. The feeling of a book so good that, as you are reading it, you never want it to end makes me smile and feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

Seriously. I love books.

Of course, because of this love of books, I tend to hoard them. I'll have stacks of them everywhere. On my nightstand, on the kitchen counter, in the corner of the living room, in the bathroom. I needed a book intervention.

Then I started to pack my house up in order to move. As I started to pack up about the 9th box of books, I decided that was it! I was going to conquer #97 on my list. I set up a criteria for keeping a book and if the book didn't meet the criteria, into a bag it went. I ended up with FIVE bags of books!! Plus, since I'm kind-of anal about the condition of my books, I decided to pass on the books to the library for others to enjoy!!

I did take a moment to say good-bye, but as I am still in the middle of unpacking boxes, I can't say that I regret it at all! (:

7: Buy A House - COMPLETED

I can't even begin to tell you how exciting it is that I have completed this one. After six years of renting, we found a beautiful four bedroom/two bath house in Trinity, Florida. We fell in love and put an offer on it the day we saw it. That was in April of 2009. Well.... October 23, we finally closed and now call it our own.

Lots of prayers.

Lots of work.

Lots of relief.

Now, we are up to our neck in painting and decorating and all of the exciting things that come with being a homeowner. Thank you to all who were in prayer with us. God is awesome and faithful and this house is an example of that.

What is a BIG family??

I come from a big family. I'm the oldest of eight and for the most part, people think my parents were crazy. Sometimes I agree. But really, I know that we are awesome.

There is just something really cool about being from a big family. However, has anyone else noticed that the "big" families are somewhat dissappering. I have three kids and people consistantly mention how they can't imagine having so many. So many?!? My mom had EIGHT!

After Thanksgiving, we were walking through the store and there they were. Hanging on an end cap. Mickey Mouse Red Footie Pajamas!! I was super excited and my husband was feeling gracious.

Now, here's a tip to those interested in puying a pair. Buy a size larger than you think you'll need. These fleece ones are tight and shrunk some. But they were totally fun for Christmas morning!!! (:

and yes, this was before my first cup of coffee....

88. Identify 25 things I like about myself - COMPLETED!

There are few things that really make me speechless. Trying to find things that I like about myself is one of them. I think that every girl has a bit of self-esteem issues and when I need to pen thing about me down, my issues creep up a bit.

But here it goes... marking one more off my list!

1. my eyes - when I was in kindergarten and would draw self portraits, I would draw these big eyes with huge eyelashes. I think it's because when I was young, someone told me I had pretty eyes.

2. my handwriting - it's a lot like my mom's. When I was just learning cursive, I would copy papers of her because I loved her handwriting.

3. my vocabulary - i love using accurate words to describe something. Why use cool, when really magnificent is so much more appropriate?

4. my ability to see the positive - I am a glass half-full kinda person.

5. my joy for missions - this was something that I NEVER thought I'd be called to, but I'm so glad God gave me a heart for the world.

6. my heritage - I have German, English, Norwegian, Scottish, and at least two or three others... I'm a mutt. That being said... it makes me 100% American. The great melting pot of dreams. Most of my great-great (maybe a few more greats) grandparents came here for dreams and for freedom. I love that.

7. my age - I am ALMOST 30. I like that age. Not quite 30 yet... but excited about my 30th birthday. Seriously, I'm expecting great things in my 30s, but for now, I'll enjoy still being in my 20s. (;

8. my hair - curly, straight, wavy... I can do anything to my hair. So many hair stylists have commented on how manageable my hair is. I agree. I love it.

9. my jobs - I have three. Mom. Teacher. Photographer. I love them all.

10. my name - seriously, except for the time in middle school when another student mispronounced it as Shaquille and I got stuck with a nickname of Shaq for two years... I enjoy having a name that very few people do.

11. my knack for picking up accents - while I don't have one now... when I spend enough time talking to my cousin or visiting my parents in SC or traveling overseas, I pick up accents very easily. It's fun to have a "twang" every now and then.

12. my leadership abilities - I get harassed about this a lot, but honestly I'm so glad that God gave my the ability to easily lead a group. I couldn't imagine it any other way.

13. my secret obsession with fashion - I could never afford what I want to wear, but I secretly obsess over vogue and fashion weeks around the world. I think fashion design is an amazing art. One day. Maybe. I could dress the way I want too. (:

14. my understanding of computers - I know a lot. Enough to understand my husband when he talks about work, but not enough to do his work. (: It's the perfect amount.

15. my desire for knowledge - continually learning is awesome. I will never say that I know everything, because there is always something to learn.

16. my cooking skills - while they are not great, I can pull off some pretty good things. It's enough to not be embarrassed, but not good enough to be expected to cook every night. Praise God for that!

17. my taste in husbands - this was the wisest choice I ever made and so glad I did.

18. my love for reading - Nothing makes me happier than a good book.

19. my enjoyment in cars - old cars. new cars. there is some serious beauty in the way a vehicle is designed and an engine is made. I love that I have learned to appreciate it.

20. my eye for beauty - I can look at almost anything and see God's fingerprints on it. But especially when it comes to taking images with my camera, I'm so thankful that I can look at a situation and see all the beautiful possibilities.

21. my freckles - after crying over them for years when I was younger, I am so glad that I have them. Plus, seeing them on my kiddos makes my heart beat with joy.

22. my disorganized, organized self - I am so disorganized over some things... but when it matters, I can be so frustratingly organized. That amazes me. Super glad about it too.

23. my attention to detail - crooked pictures, a stray thread, unmatched socks, a miscalculated story... all drive me nuts. But my attention to details makes me a better photographer and a better teacher. I'm so glad I am that way.

24. my love for theatre - to find somewhere I just "fit", like a theatre stage, is incredible.

25. my relationship with God - saved this for last, because it's the thing that I think I like the best. I made a decision to follow Christ, and not just in some things, but everything and I never regret that. It makes me a better person and it pushes me to continually seek God. In everything. Yeah. Favorite thing ever.

Sometimes a photo session just make me really happy.

This was one of those sessions.

Maybe it was because I'm so excited to meet my nephew Aaden. Maybe it was because Eric makes me laugh at his off-the-cuff comments. Maybe it's because I took them to one of my favorite places to shoot. Maybe it's because my sister really is this beautiful and makes it so easy to photograph.

Whatever it was. It worked. These photos makes me very happy.

One of the biggest honors I've ever been given was given to me this past summer. Amy DeYoung, a photographer whom I greatly admire, asked me to shoot a session for her. I have been blessed to work with Amy for several years now and when she asked if I could shoot a session for her, I was so humbled.

I started the day with Alison and Cameron in Downtown Tampa for a 50s throwback. It was amazing and I had such a great time!!

I love photographing seniors. They are so much fun. Full of energy, ready to tell you all about what their plans are, wanting to share all about their end of the school year events. It's just awesome.

Savannah was exactly that. awesome.

She attends Dunedin High and is involved on teams and in clubs all around campus. For her session, we wanted to hit a wooded area and then, of course, the beach! So we headed to my favorite secret spot in Palm Harbor. (It's not a secret I'm keeping, it's a secret because hundreds of people drive right by and never even notice it!) Then we headed down to the Dunedin Causeway.

Oh about 13 years ago.... I met Amanda Jackson. Yep with a J and L as the beginning of our last names, we sat together in Mr. McCoy's Algebra II class. Now, while I couldn't tell you much of what I learned in that class, I can tell you that Amanda (or as I remember - Mandi) was the kind of person you like to meet on your first day. Extremely friendly and willing to help with anything.

We went on to work in the Drama club together and three years later, we graduated as the first graduating class at Palm Harbor University High.

That was 10 years ago.

Wow. I just dated myself and once again, feel old.

Anyway.... in the new "Social Network" era, Mandi and I found each other on Facebook and when she needed some photos taken for her Grandmother's 80th birthday, she gave me a call. Actually, it was an email, but that's really not the point. (:

The point is.... Mandi and her sister, Alicia, and their two cousins, Taylor and Tori, met me out at Wall Spring Park for pictures. They were great and as you'll see, they take pictures amazingly.

64. Watch a live birth - COMPLETED

The whole idea behind my 1001 in 101 is to make every moment I can count. So, I really wanted my first completed task to be a big one. Something that may or may not have been possible to complete. Well.... it was.

I was so happy when my best friend called me and told that she could help me complete #64. After I asked her what #64 was, (C'mon, I don't have them all memorized by number yet!) I was so excited that she and her husband were willing to share such a special moment with me. Seriously, I have the BESTEST friend EVER.

On Thursday, January 29th, I met Emily and Jamie at the hospital and just after noon, little Ella Gwyn was born. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. It really made me think about how awesome God is. I mean the body was created to do some incredible things! It was also nothing like I expected. Funny, since I have three kids and so one would think I've been through this a time or two or three. But it's such a different experience when you aren't actually HAVING the baby.

Oh and since Jamie had no desire to do it a second time, I got to cut the umbilical cord. So cool. (:

This week, I was able to go and spend some time with Seth. Seth and his family go to church with us and I had the privilage of photographing Seth, his older brother Jace and older sister Ava for our church's amazing preschool department.

But, back to Seth... Seth is 6 months old and already has quite a story. You see, at 4 weeks of age, Seth was diagnosed as profoundly deaf. But that hasn't broken his spirit or his parents.

Seth is currently a candidate for cochlear implant surgery and that has been the driving force behind Profoundly Seth. Please take a minute to go and read Seth's story and all about John, Ellyn, Ava, Jace, and Eli. Trust me, you will be moved by their story. I was.

101 things in 1001 days

This is something that I've known about and read about for awhile now, but never felt the urge to really do. Until now.

In the past week, I have read two amazing books. One - The Shack by Wm. Paul Young and Two - The Christmas Sweater by Glenn Beck. Both have really hit me in the exact same spot.

You see, we are not guaranteed a tomorrow. We don't know what our future holds and we can't change our past, but yet we tend to spend most of our time there. Thinking about what we could have changed or trying to plan in case we get to "some" point in our lives.

I'm over it. I want to know that when everything is all said and done, people will look back at my life and be able to say two things about me: 1. I made every moment count and 2. I did everything that God placed me here to do.

So to help me, I need to set some goals.... here's the run down:

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Some common goal setting tips:
1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.

2. Stay Focussed. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.

3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.

4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.

5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.

Yes. It has been a long time since my last post.

I am a bad blogger.

BUT!

Today was a sad day. You see, my sister, after living with us during her senior year of high school, moved away to start the next chapter of her life at Florida State University.

Today Hannah missed her. I miss her too.

I am so grateful for Anna. She is a familiar face to my blog, because she has been with me every step of the way as I build my photography business. She has been a great model for me. Anytime I needed to practice, she let me. Senior pictures, Prom pictures, ROTC pictures and finally Graduation pictures.

Thank you Anna for the practice. And for being my sister. i *heart* you.

Seriously this job can be way to much fun sometimes! This session was no exception to that rule! I had such a good time getting to know these boys. I found out that they LOVE baseball and it's a good thing that I'm not a Rod Sox fan... These boys love their Yankees! Oh and even though they live in Tennessee, Titans are not the favorite football team. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers take that spot!

Indian Rocks Beach proved to be a great background for these beach pictures. I hope that these images will be some of their favorites on their beach wall at home.

4th of July ~ Treasure Island Style!!

Over 12 years ago, a met a girl named Emily. We went to the same high school and I ended up visiting her youth group. We quickly became friends and after only knowing her a short time, I was invited to her family's Fourth of July celebration! I got hooked.

Now... after boyfriends, high school, college, husbands and babies. We are still best friends and I still head to Treasure Island for the Fourth of July. We enjoy the beach for days and look forward to seeing friends and families all come in on the 4th for the cookout and parade.

Seriously. This is my favorite holiday.

Hats were really popular this year!

The key is finding the perfect parade costume.

Once everyone is ready, we get a group shot and head out to march up Gulf Boulevard and down the beach. Stopping at our favorites locations to sing a song, recite the pledge or do a cartwheel.

Yes... after 19 years of doing this... we have acquired fans!

Even dogs and babies march! Interested in joining us? Awesome! But maybe you can think of a way of showing your American Pride where you live. We are blessed to live in this amazing country... take a moment to show your pride! We do.

Guatemala 2008

This is the second summer that I have had the amazing opportunity to go to Guatemala. I have decided to give some of my time each summer to go with Global Expeditions to change the world. Not only the world of Guatemalans, but also the world of a U.S. teenager. You see, with Global Expeditions I am given the opportunity to lead 20 teenagers into life-changing events. In Guatemala, we built a house, did VBS, performed a drama in churches and markets. All of these stretched these U.S. teenagers more than I think anything could. No cell phones, no internet, no comforts of home. They saw life as they've never known and I believe that THAT was the amazing world changing that I got to do this summer.

We started our trip this year in Guatemala City working with Potter's House, an organization that works with people who scavenge through the dump for things to sell. They truly view these scavengers as treasures and minister to them in several ways. After visiting the dump, we went into the homes and brought them food and prayer. Several homes had only young children there. The parents were scavenging in the dump and the older children were at school. That left the 4 and 5 year olds at home alone.

We only spent one day in Guatemala City and then we traveled to San Pedro la Laguna. It's a town in the the shores of Lake Atitlán and the same town that I was in last year.

We built a house for a family of five. They were all living in a single room about 4' x 6' and our global partner said that they were the one of the poorest families in the church.

We also did VBS at the schools and did some door-to-door ministry around the house that we were building. My kodak moment from the whole trip came from one of the VBS' that we did. There was a little boy who, just as we were cleaning up, came running up to me and asked me for a VBS book. We handed out these Spanish VBS story books to all of the children who came. So I asked him if he got one and he told me yes, but he needed another one. I tried to explain that we had given them all away and since he had one he didn't need one. But he kept insisting! Thinking that I was mixing up my Spanish, I had a translator come up and try talking to him. Nope, my Spanish wasn't bad. He had a book, but wanted another and he wasn't leaving until he got one. So, I went digging. He really was the cutest little thing. Probably only 4 or 5 years old. I finally found one and as soon as I did. He was gone. He ran out of the room and all we could do was laugh at his persistence. We locked up the room, gathered our things and were getting ready to leave, when all of a sudden he burst into the room, tears streaming down his face, and he ran upto me and threw his arms around me and thanked me for the book that was no longer in his hands.

I don't know what he did with that book or why he needed it, but I do know that whatever it was God knew and God made sure he got that book.

Shelby ~ Class of 2008

Well, of all my 2008 seniors... Shelby's session was definitely the most exciting. We decided to take a trip to Ybor City to do her session and as I finally found a patch of grass, we hopped out to snag a coupe shots and I locked my keys in my car! *sigh* I had never done that before. Luckily, I had my equipment, so while I waited for my car to get unlocked we finished up the session!

Shelby is an incredible young lady who I not only had the pleasure to photograph, but also teach this year. She was an honor student, an athlete and Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music. She has a way of making anyone laugh and it was a blessing to meet her and her family this year.

Heroes. That's what I think today is all about. Memorial Day is a day to remember all of the heroes that have made America what it is today. I am so thankful for current and past military servicemen. They have a job that I could never do, but one that I couldn't live without. If it weren't for them and what they do, I wouldn't have the freedoms that I have. For that I am thankful.

On this Memorial Day, I'd like you to meet Sarah Ryann. Sarah is the daughter of two United State Marines. Her mother is currently stationed in Iraq and her father is stationed in the Pacific. This is what Memorial Day is all about. I recently got a letter from Sarah asking me to do some pictures for her mom (ok... someone helped her...) and I couldn't be happier to do them.

This is only a sneak peek for now, but I thought it was important for me to post them today. Thank you to Sarah's parents. Your sacrifice gives me freedom and I am truly thankful. There will be more pictures soon.

The Sound of Music

In between everything else I've been doing over the past few months, I had the opportunity to stage direct Rodger and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music". The ENTIRE senior class at Oldsmar Christian School worked long and hard to put on this production and it turned out AMAZING! I've done senior sessions where I've gotten the seniors dirty. Joe was the first one where I fell into the water, instead of him. Here's a quick image from our afternoon of playing in the woods.

Amber is an amazing senior. Not only is she beautiful, but smart too! She was voted most talented senior and that's no joke. This young lady has an amazing voice!

I had the opportunity to hang out with Amber and her sister Shelby last week and was able to capture these images.

On a final note: one of my most favorite things about Amber.... how this girl accessories every outfit!! Amazing....

Florida Ice Hockey??

Yes... believe it or not, Tampa has a hockey team. It's even a Stanley Cup Champion team. This would be the one aspect of my life that is totally NOT Floridian. I LOVE hockey!!

We were really lucky to have been giving some tickets to Vinny Lecavalier's sponsors suite for the Florida Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning. Plus, we had the opportunity to meet him after the game. Usually this would be a Mike and me trip, but we were lucky to score an extra ticket for Michael. This was his first hockey game!

This beautiful senior was a blast to shoot and was willing to go anywhere, try anything and even lay in the mud. She is going to be attending Florida State this fall. An amazing young lady!! I'm sure she is going to go far!

Congratulations to my little brother, Michael, and his new wife, Melissa. Michael and Melissa have been friends and sweethearts since middle school. My brother is a Rescue Diver for the Navy and once he was done with SAAR school, he married Melissa on Honeymoon Island in Dunedin, Florida.

Congratulations Michael and Melissa! I love you both!

p.s. - Photographer's note... most people are using digital nowadays, but sometimes you gotta go old school. IF YOU DO... check to make sure any and all film you buy isn't expired! If it is is WILL effect the developing of the pictures. *sigh* I was reminded of this the hard way.....

San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala

I had the blessing of leading a team of 23 teenagers on a missions trip to Guatemala this summer and I am just now getting around to posting only a few of the nearly 800 pictures that I took.

The thing that amazed me was the pure beauty of the country and people of Guatemala. The children that we worked with were beautiful. During our time there, we facilitated a VBS during the afternoons and built a house in the mornings. We ministered to well over 750 children during our time there.

If you are ever asked to go on a missions trip or if God is leading you that way, DO IT! It'll change your life.

Through Their Eyes Africa

My good friend David Hessemer is doing a blogathon TODAY for his "Through Their Eyes" Africa project. He is going to be taking a team (myself and David Jay included) to Africa next year to areas where all the adults have died and the children are more or less on their own with little aid. In addition to helping the people living there, we will also be teaching them to take photographs, in the hope of giving them a skill as well as to be able to see the world the way they see it. The photographs they take will be formed into a traveling exhibit all over the country.

Highland Christian School

Over the past year, Michael has had the privilege of attending Highland Christian School. He was enrolled in the VPK program and was blessed to have two incredible teachers. Ms. June and Ms. Diane have helped Michael memorize his entire 23rd Psalm, the 10 commandments, new memory verses week after week and all of the basic preparations for Kindergarten.

I wanted to document a day at Highland for Michael. I want to be able to put together an album that followed an average day in his life at preschool. A BIG thanks to the school director, Mrs. Beverley Kennedy, for letting me play along with the kiddos!

Congratulations to my cousin and his new bride! What a blessing it was to see Gary and Michelle unite before God and family. They are an amazing fit and I know that they will be so happy together. Two of my kids had the privilege of being in the wedding party, so though I couldn't shoot a lot, I was able to grab a couple images that I hope they enjoy! Welcome to the family Michelle!

A first REAL haircut!

For the past five years Michael's dad has been cutting his hair. However, after learning about careers at school, he was insisting on going to get his hair cut at a barber. He wanted to see if they really had a red and blue swirly light. The Palm Harbor Barber Shop has been in the same location since 1939 and carries a lot of history and memories. Another memory was made this past week when Michael got his first REAL haircut!

Church Picnic!

We recently had a church picnic at our Pastor's new house. Barry and Tracy Sullivan have been great friends of ours and amazing pastors! Check out the church website! I took the opportunity to play with the camera! I am shooting Aperture priority mode 99% of the time, but there have been several times when the camera's TTL meter just isn't reading what I want it to. So, I am really trying to make myself use Manual mode as often as possible. The picnic was the perfect pace to just play!

T.J. McPhee-Barry 4/8/90 - 3/18/07

T.J. McPhee-Barry was the 16 year old son of a close friend of ours. He was killed in a car accident. The accident was just that, an accident. T.J. was the starting quarterback on his high school team and was a true friend to so many. Less then 48 hours after his death, his high school held a candlelight vigil. There were also memorials set up at the crash site and on the school campus. Between 200 - 300 faculty, students, staff, friends and family attended. I was asked to capture some of the moments for the family. I was honored. My prayers are with the Barry family. I grieve for and with them.

I'll admit it, I love photography. I always have. My mom was a photographer when I was young and I used to love going with her to shoots or to the studio. I still remember the first time she turned our bathroom into a darkroom and taught me how to develop film.

Once I got to middle school, I worked on the school newspaper, just so that I could have a school issued camera. I loved it. In high school, I actually got to take Art 2-D, which I used the camera as my focus, since I can't draw a stick figure to save my life!! I've never thought of myself as being good, but I just enjoyed it. The camera has always been something that I've just been comfortable with.

So, this is just that.... this is my little piece of the world wide web where I can just watch myself excel. I want to see what my good shots are and I want to see how with each post, I improve.

Who am I? That's a great question... which has so many answers.

I am wife, mom, sister, Disney-nut, daughter, friend, teacher, Starbucks lover, Christian, Apple-fanatic, pet owner, music fan.... oh I could go on and on. But here. Here in my own piece of World Wide Web, I am writing about what I love to do in the free time that I am graciously given.

Whether it's my love of traveling or photography or maybe just me writing to myself.... I'm just going to jot down what I feel needs to be said. Sometimes it might be a tip for the next time you are getting ready for a trip or maybe it might be the pictures that I took for a family that needed to document life. Who knows. Come along for the experience. ;)
